Today, it is very common to see a quote or an article about how important people are in an organization. A very famous one is;

CFO asked CEO : What happens if we invest in developing people & they leave us? CEO : What happens if we don't & they stay ?

Although, I am also a person who believes that people make the difference, in this article, I will try a controversial approach to show importance of people.

There is no one strategy framework which does not talk about people when it comes to capability analysis of an organization. Some include people as part of resources and some directly address people as one major capability. However, there are also realities of business. Some time ago, I shared an article on my Linkedin account about “Corporate Bullshitters”. It got more than 8K views which was a record among my posts. Article was dividing people into three categories and stating that smart ones who are not doing the job thrives. Pitfall for many organizations is deception of perception. If this is the case then why companies are spending time and effort to develop people and measure their performance?

Our argument is clear. Jobs can be delegated to anyone since deception of perception is in place. Perception is the main decision driver. And organizations are still not falling apart. They continue to survive which may bring a conclusion that other capabilities such us processes / routines, architecture and culture that are in place, can still deliver effective results. Then, there lies a perfect opportunity for any corporation who are investing heavily on talent acquisition, talent development, retention and on efforts to assign right talent to right job; do not spend a penny on these activities and focus on the rest.

I am not sure if there is right or wrong in here. If this conclusion makes sense to you, you are free to try and get some spiritual support via Buddhist prayer wheels. Should this idea sound crazy to you, then you believe in importance of people in organizations. Good luck in avoiding deception of perception!
